All of our hires so far at CodePen have some ownership of the company in the form of stock options. This seems to be the most popular option for companies like ours, but it’s not the only way. We’re joined by our lawyer Alex King who explains the difference between stock options vs. grants. There is a lot that goes into this, including getting a valuation, figuring out how vesting will work, how to issue those shares, deciding how they must be exercised on, and more. And everyone agrees: it’s a great thing to offer employees. It’s a form of compensation, but also a motivator. The better we all do building the product, and the longer we all stick around doing it, the more these stocks will be worth.
