Tags are like global Collections. Any Pen with the same Tag will appear on the page for that Tag. Here’s #rainbow. A Pen of yours could appear on that page (largely weighted toward recently created) by adding the “rainbow” tag to it.
The Pen Owner (or any Editor) can add/edit Tags on a Pen in Pen Settings.
Note that you cannot control what appears on a Tag page, as they are public and global. If you have a problem with a Tag page, reach out to support.
Use Cases for Tags
Generally the purpose of a tag is to lightly apply meaning to a Pen. So if you create a Pen implementing a “tabs” UI/UX pattern, you could apply the tag “tabs” and group it together with others that have done the same. Tags are also part of the searchable content of Pens, so it may help yourself and others find it that way.
But there are other use cases, like:
- Allow people to opt-in to making their Pen visible to a group. That’s how CodePen Challenges are done, for example, the global tag for any Pen participating in challenges, or a specific challenge.
- Ask students to apply a unique tag to a Pen when they complete an assignment.
Limits for Tags
Any Pen can have up to 5 tags.
