Pens can be exported from the CodePen Editor to your local machine. Users need to be logged in and be able to view the Pen to export. It is done by just clicking the Export option under the Pen Actions menu.

Your web browser should automatically download a .zip file.

Files

The .zip file, when unzipped, will contain all the files in the Pen. These files will be in a src directory.

The export will also include a dist folder which is the complete set of files from the last successful build of the Pen.

It will also include a LICENSE file indicating the original license the Pen was under while on CodePen. Private Pens will have no license.

Future

Our hope is to ship the CodePen Compiler as an open source project and include it as a dependency in the export, along with a script and instructions on running the build process yourself. For now, you’ll only have the the original source files and last built files, and to continue working on it locally you’ll need to wire up your own processing.
