Our “Create” menu just got an update!

We made it easier to get to your Pen templates.

And now you can create a collection directly from the “Create” menu.

Unlimited Pen Templates for Everybody!

We’ve lifted the limits on Pen templates. Now everyone on CodePen can save as many templates as they like. In the past, free members were limited to three saved templates.

The template feature lets you create and save a default set of code and settings for making new Pens. Think of them like a reusable “starter kit”.

Say sometimes you like to use Haml, Sass, and have jQuery available — you could make a template for that. Maybe sometimes you like to use Pug, Sass, and the responsive meta tag in the <head> — you could make a template for that, too.

Template Inspiration

The best templates help you skip all the prep work of creating a new Pen with your favorite libraries and preprocessors. Here are a couple of examples to check out.

Or, you can clear out any of your Pen editor defaults with:

If you have any preprocessor or library defaults set in your Editor Settings, that blank template overrides them so you can start a completely fresh new Pen.

Pro Tip: you can save any of those templates to your own templates by forking them.

Sharing Templates

You can share a Pen template with anyone to help give them a head start with a new Pen. The URL format is:

https://codepen.io/pen?template=SLUG

Replace “SLUG” with the string at the end of your Pen’s URL. For example, this URL: https://codepen.io/pen?template=KMKPLB opens a template from this Pen: https://codepen.io/chriscoyier/pen/KMKPLB
